A Place in the Sun: Home or Away? Brighton or Gran Canaria

After years of preparation David and Adrian are ready to take the plunge with their dream of an early retirement, but will they plump for Brighton or Gran Canaria?

More about David and Adrian and their property search

After years of hard work, Adrian and David are dreaming of an early retirement. They've previously had their fingers bunt when a property they looked at in Gran Canaria turned out to be an illegal build, meaning they had to back out of the sale. Will this, and their family ties, convince them to buy a property in Brighton, or will they be won over by the laid back pace of life in the Canaries?

Home properties - Brighton

Since the 1800's Brighton has been a popular weekend getaway, and in recent times it has experienced something of a housing boom, especially among London commuters. This popularity is reflected in the price. On average properties on the south coast are 60% higher than in the rest of the country. Brighton was one of the few cities in the UK which was barely affected by the downturn, with house prices generally staying staic and in some cases rising, meaning that property in this area is a sound investment. Adrian and David enjoy the country feel and bohemian independence of the city and also enjoy popping over to France for day trips, something they could do very easily from the coast.  Will this be enough to sway them?

Property 1
The first Brighton property is a quirky flat with its own tower available through King and Chasemore for £250,000.

Property 2
Next up is a small but perfectly formed cottage in the village of Rodmell, half an hour outside of Brighton, and with the couple's desired outside space. The property is priced at £215,000 and is being sold by J Wagstaff and Co.

Property 3
Their final south coast property is a bungalow in Newhaven, a short car ride from Brighton. It is on with Your Move for £250,000.

Away properties - Gran Canaria

Over in Gran Canaria the couple are hoping that they'll be able to get the space and the peace they are searching for. The temperate climate and abundance of wildlife will also mean that their dream of being self sufficient could become a very real possibility. Gran Canaria also has property prices that are less than the average in Spain and are among the cheapest in the Canary Islands, meaning that Adrian and David's budget will stretch further.
