A Place in the Sun: Home or USA? Birmingham or Fort Lauderdale

Tom and Colette can't agree where to start their new life, Birmingham or Florida? With £320k to spend on their first home, Tom wants to stay in Birmingham, but Colette doesn't.

More about Tom and Collette and their property search

Tom Wright and Colette Lees currently live in seperate properties but now want to set up home together along with Colette's 15 year-old son.

While Tom currently lives in Birmingham and has a burgeoning business there, Colette wants to follow her family and her heart over the pond to Florida. With her son's education to consider, it's not going to be an easy decision, especially as the couple have never spent more than two weeks under the same roof!

Home properties - Birmingham

Multi cultural and cosmopolitan Birmingham is England's vibrant 'second city' that has had millions of pounds of investment over the last few years. Over the next ten years this looks set to increase with over £17.5 billion being pumped into the former industrial heartland. It's Tom's home and he feels it could also be Colette and her son's. Though property is a lot more expensive than where she currently lives, property is diverse and there are many schools rated 'excellent' by Ofsted which should smooth her transition.

Away properties - Florida

Nearly 25% of properties purchased in Florida are from overseas buyers and it's easy to see why. The state is not called the sunshine state for no reason - it is the sunniest place in the USA. It also has over 1,000 miles of beaches. Many of Colette's family already live in the state and so if they did move here, the transition may be easier for her son. Will this be enough to encourage Tom to leave his fledgling business?

Property 1
The first property the couple view costs £234,000 and is available through Coldwell Banker.

Property 2
The second property the couple have a look around is also available through Coldwell Banker. It costs £247,000.

Property 3
The final property, once again available through Coldwell Banker for £219,000.

Will Tom be convinced by Colette and buy abroad or will Birmingham win the day?
