More about Barry and Amanda and their property search

With a cool million to spend on their first home together, partners Barry Bowen and Amanda Goodyear are not having to compromise on quality. What they are struggling with is where this property should be. While Amanda is keen on a move to the familiar Sussex coast, Barry wants to relocate to Santa Barbara where his sister and sons live. Balancing the demands of two different families with their desire to be under one roof is not going to be an easy task for these lovebirds, or for Jasmine and Jonnie!

Home properties - East Sussex

Generally considered to be an affluent area, East Sussex is popular with commuters like Barry, who can be in London within an hour. The county is a fascinating mix of sleek city pleasures, laid-back beach life and unspoilt countryside. Where else could you relive a Norman battle, visit an Indian-style royal palace, go llama trekking, find a 69m long chalk man on a hillside and dine on a 1920's Golden Arrow steam train, all in one day? Property prices here are predictably high and have remained so despite the downturn, with the average property price between 7 and 15% higher than the rest of the U.K.

Away properties - Santa Barbara

Known as the American Riviera because of its miles of beaches and sunny temperatures, Santa Barabara is a popular tourist destination that's increasingly becoming a favourite with house hunters. Beloved by directors for its mix of landscapes, it has been a central location for TV shows and films since the 1920's. A cultural hotspot packed with parks and museums, there will definitely be enough to entice Barry and Amanda who are used to living in buzzing cities. Best of all, there are over 300 days of sunshine a year.
