Jasmine Harman and Jonnie Irwin look at a stunning villa for sale in Portugal
Michael and Jackie are looking for a retirement property. But will it be the Lake District, or the sun, sea and sand of Portugal?
Retired couple Jackie and Michael have a family that have flown the nest, and now want some time to focus on their own interests, and a new life in a different location. They love walks with their red and white setter Jake, but can't decide where Jake will be chasing his tail.
With a budget of £230,000 for either a home or away property, can Jackie entice Michael with fond memories of the Lakes, or will the sun, sea and sand convince Jackie that Portugal is the best option for all three of them?
Home properties - The Lakes
The Lake District National Park is one of 14 in the UK and one of the most popular. Tourism to the Lake District continues to grow every year, with visitors from all over the world coming to the region to view the beautiful landscapes and take part in the large number of outdoor activities that the region has to offer. For many this means a visit to the twin towns of Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere, a tour of the shops and a boat trip on the lakes. While there are plenty of beautiful vistas that Jake can enjoy running around in, will the couple be drawn to the Portugese sun?
Away properties - Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve is Portugal’s playground. In terms of land area it covers no more than an eighth of the country but nevertheless has more hotel rooms, holiday apartments and villas for rent than the rest of Portugal put together. The area has attracted buyers for several decades and is a favourite destination for Europeans seeking to exchange the stress and fast pace of modern urban living in their own countries for a more relaxed and healthy lifestyle abroad. The standard of living is high and costs are relatively low compared to northern Europe. Golf lovers have over 30 courses to chose from, with plans for another twenty or so in the pipeline, and there are no shortage of sporting and leisure activities for the non-golfer sincluding tennis, horse-riding, bird watching, walking, swimming, fishing, sailing, jet skiing and micro light flying. Perhaps most impressive is the beautiful terrain with typically large sweeping bays and sandy coves all washed by the clear waters of the Atlantic.
Will the couple be poop-a-scooping in the lakes or organising a doggy passport for Jake?
