A Place in the Sun: Home or Away? Derbyshire or Marbella

Jonnie and Jasmine help dress designer Sharon decide between launching her new evening-wear business in Derbyshire or in Marbella.

More about Sharon and her property search

Sharon Hurd wants to set up her own evening-wear and bridal design business but can’t decide whether to stay in the UK where it will be easier to get established, or whether to move to sunny Spain and make a name for herself amongst Marbella’s millionaires.

Home properties - Derbyshire

While property prices in Derbyshire are slightly below the national average, the popular market town of Ashbourne where Sharon is basing her search has high prices which are rising all the time, as affluent young families and commuters move into the town. This is great news for Sharon's new business as it means that the affluent population will have money to spend on her dresses. However, it does mean that she may have to be realistic about what she can afford, especially as she is looking for a combined business and home. Will Jonnie be able to give her what she wants for her budget or will Spain still hold more sway? Jonnie may think he has it in the bag with an 'on budget' home in her dream location, but will Sharon run a mile when she discovers that it needs extensive restoration work?

Away properties - Marbella

One of the main reasons that the Costa del Sol has become a major tourist destination is its Mediterranean climate, with good weather right through the year, and a mean temperature of 18 degrees. The summer temperatures vary between 25 and 30 degrees, and in winter they rarely drop below 14 degrees. While tourists flock to the area, it is also popular with buyers, and many areas of Marbella have become havens for the super rich. It is here that Sharon hopes to set up her business, with the hope that she can channel some of this wealth into her own pockets. But will her friends and family want her moving to another country? And will setting up a business prove too difficult?

Property 1
The first property in Marbella is a private sale which costs £173,076.

Property 2
Next is a £273,000 property which is being sold by Elves

What decision will Sharon make? Will it be confetti on the Costas or diamantes in Derbyshire?
